Employee Personal Info Exposed in State Department Hack

The US State Department's unclassified e-mail server has been the victim of a data breach which affected less than 1% of the workforce.

As detailed by the Politico report confirmed by US officials, the employees affected by the e-mail system hack were notified, but the alert sent also discloses the fact that the e-mail system containing classified information was not breached.

According to the breach alert sent to the State Department workforce there "is an ongoing investigation and we are working with partner agencies to conduct a full assessment. We will reach to any additional employees as needed."

The State Department employee alert also includes a reminder for all employees to limit the amount of personal and sensitive information sent via the e-mail system, as well as to mark the messages which do contain such info as "Official - Privacy/PII."
